I am compliling a list of what vampire lovers believe to be the best vampire novels of all time. The results will be published on a website I am creating on the mythology of vampires. In order to qualify, the novel must have (a) vampire(s) or vampirism as it's PRIMARY characters/theme. Please list the one, two or three best vampire novels you have ever read. Please include Title AND author and if you wish a brief synopsis and/or the reason you feel it is best. Thank You!

Dracula, by Bram Stoker.
Sunshine, by Robin McKinley, is one of my favorites.
Interview with the Vampire, by Anne Rice, should of course be on the list.
The Undead and Unwed series, by MaryJanice Davidson, is a lot of fun.
You asked about novels, but I hope that you include Buffy the Vampire Slayer in your website. The show made huge contributions to the vampire mythology and to the idea of the vampire (and vampire slayer) in pop culture. The show also spawned spin-off novelizations and independent novels, comic books and graphic novels, and nonfiction books. It definitely changed the vampire landscape, so to speak.

Agyar, by Steven Brust.

A woman makes Agyar a vampire a century ago. She has complete magical power over his actions and he hates her. He enthralls a young woman the same way but she breaks the spell. He chooses to do the same thing to the bond between him and his hated creater, even though he knows it will mean his death.

Modern setting, no uber-gothic atmosphere, in depth characterizations, meaningful story.

If you want to collect a "worst of" list, my choice would easily be "I Vampire" by Michael Romkey. Interestingly: modern setting, no uber-gothic atmosphere, flat characters, awful story.

The best vampire short story is "Carmilla" by J. Sheridan Le Fanu (1872) which was probably a strong influence on both Stoker's "Dracula's Guest" (1897) and of course, "Dracula."

Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's St. Germain Chronicles. They were some of the first vampire novels I ever read, and are much better than Anne Rice's vampire chronicles. The author's homepage is http://www.chelseaquinnyarbro.net/saint-germain.html and there's more info there if you're interested.

Salem's Let by Stephen King - it's great to see more traditional vampires.

Vampires ARE cliche. you could blame Smeyer for that. even nevertheless, there continues to be some wish. I even have arise with 2 opportunities: variety one is very trouble-free. instead of going with right this moment's vampires (eye-catching, passionate, no longer probable evil, the likes) you'll be able to desire to flow lower back to the unique delusion of folklore. i could desire to describe that, even nevertheless it might call for a good number of words and soak up a good number of our time - I recommend you do a splash prognosis for this. yet be warned - society could desire to have switched perspectives on vampires for a reason. Readers could think of that the classic vampires are cliche, too, yet upload your individual twists and that i think of that they had savor it. Or, a minimum of i might. variety 2 is somewhat harder, even nevertheless that's what I even have achieved with my novel. Invent an fullyyt new species consistent with vampires. this way you do no longer ought to subject with regard to the objective marketplace arguing over your individual alternatives on the fictitious creatures - instead of molding into something else, you're literally infinite. Create an entire new call for them and characteristic exciting with it. that's what originality is all approximately. Oh, and that i enormously much forgot - do no longer lead them to SPARKLE! additionally, the guy above gave some large suggestion. No love memories or emo vampires. lead them to easily vampires, no longer purely an angsty teen with fangs.

Fred Saberhagen wrote the best ones, in my opinion. Starting with 'An Old Friend of the Family' then 'A Matter of Taste' he had, I think three more, but it has been so long since I read them, I cannot truly tell you the titles. Maybe his website.
