Well done. You have spotted the flaw in this really annoying saying. Post this question on every site you can find and hopefully people will stop saying it especially in that equally annoying accent.
To answer the question: No, you can read the label on a box of chocolates.

You can read the label and get a general idea, but you're never going to really know until you go through and try the chocolates :)
