refract light in such a way as to appear to shapeshift? Is this even theoretically possible? If so, what kind of machine or object would do such a thing?

interesting question. yes you could and it would be very simple. just project the image you want people to see into their eyes. Your computer screen is doing it at you right now.

The onyl reason you dont think objects on the screen are real is because the picture is small, you are used toseeing them on the screen. But imagine if someone built a computer screen into a window frame such that you didn't know it was a computer screen, they could manipulate a false view and it would be very difficult to tell it was fake.

I challenge the first part:
"Since we do not see actually objects, only reflected light"

If I tried to define "to see", it would involve a discussion of how the eye processes the light reflected from an object, and how the brain processes the signal from the eye's optic nerve.

Theoretically someone could hold up a mirror and appear to shapeshift into you.
