2 weeks ago, whenever I started up my computer, it either said "operating system not found" or "select: last config , safemode, normal". For the 'operating system', all i did was press CtrlAltDel and everything was fine. For the 'highlight' one, i picked last config that worked, and everything was fine. But just yesterday, both of them would not work anymore, my computer kept restarting upon getting to that black windows screen with the blue bar on the bottom.

So I called technical support, they told me exactly what to do with the recovery disk, so I did it and everything was fine lastnight. I must've shut down my computer like 5 times, and everytime i started it again, it was absolutely fine.

So now this morning. I got the "please highlight screen", and none of the selections i picked would work..it kept restarting on me. So I tried the recovery disk once more but it wouldn't load. I press F12 to boot directly from CD, but a blue screen came up.

5 tries later, i'm on

5 tries later, it seems perfectly fine, but the 1st time i was actually able to get back on, my computer froze after about 5 min of usage.

It could be a problem with your RAM or hard drive. You might have received a diagnostics disk with your computer when you bought it...if so, boot to that and run tests on your RAM and hard drive. If not, you can download MemTest86 and burn it to CD or to a floppy disk and boot to that to test your RAM. Check with your computer manufacturer to figure out what model hard drive you have and get a diagnostic test tool for that.

This is assuming you are using XP:

The likely culprit is the Master Boot Record. It's the guy that's responsible for properly getting Windows started when you turn on the computer. Given that your Recovery CD isn't working this may be problematic.

The first thing you need to do is get the recovery CD functioning. If you are unable to do so the rest of this is moot: you will need to have a technician take a look at it. If you are able to get it running, do the following:

Once the CD loads and you skip the disclaimers you will have some options (usually 3) one of which being the Recovery Console. Once there, it will look an aweful lot like the DOS or CMD prompt. You'll want to type:

fixmbr

And hit enter. Once done type "exit" and restart the computer (after taking out the recovery cd). Hopefully that solves your problem.

it seems pretty random where your computer freezes, so i'm going to guess that you either have a problem with your powersupply or your motherboard.
I've seen this type of problem before and 4 out of 5 times it was a faulty power supply.

try changing out the power supply and see if it does the same thing. a bad power supply can also cause damage to your motherboard and pretty much everything else that's connected to it.

voltage meter doesn't always detect problems with a psu, btw. i've had plenty of psus that were bad that had all status green on a voltage meter.
good luck.

.....oh it's a laptop. that's a toughy

There was a computer at work that did the same thing you're describing. It was found to be a virus that attacked the system files.

Wow, sounds like either your power supply is going out or your hard drive.
I would try re-installing the O.S. and go from there.
Get a Volt-Tester from Wal-Mart ($10) and check the power supply.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
