Ok, yesterday my laptop really started acting up, I would turn it on and it would just go really slow, when I clicked on the internet explorer, it took like 5 minutes before it would display my home page and after that it would work, but it kept on locking up and I was also listening to music and the music kept on freezing and skipping. Then it tarted saying when I turned it on that there is a problem with disk drive 2, back up all your data immediatley and disk failure is imminent???????? It's working better now, I switched wireless networks, it's not going slow anymore but if it has to display something such as a music video, it won't show it, I can still play music though and it won't let me redownload the media player or anything and btw it is still showing that disk failure when I turn it on. Any suggestions, I have only had it for 3 months now but I don't really have the money to get it fixed. It's a Compaq presario v5000 by the way. Thanks to all responses.

Yes, the SMART thing is what is detecting it. It seems as though it is only affecting media devices now though??? That's weird, or is that just what hard drive 2 deals with?

It should still be under warranty...try not to use it much more and contact Compaq/HP to get service done on it. They will be able to save your data before it becomes lost forever. If your disk fails, all your data is probably lost.

As said earlier, u do not need to look for any support or anything if your computer is in problem especially when its a hardware related problem......; u should directly make use of the Warranty.......
I thing ur laptop is giving this warning based on the SMART. SMART is Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology used to predict the failure of a hard disk. And ur laptop may be going slow when it needs to access the 2nd disk drive that may not be working properly.......
And don't allow anyone other than the Compaq people to handle ur computer or ur Warranty may get void.............

It seams the hard drive has some bad tracks, some day will fail completely, in the mean time right click on drive c: from my computer go to property then tools then click on the first window, a pop up menu will open check the little two boxes one says fix all errors and one says fix bad tracks and click OK, then the computer will check that after you restart the computer.
Note: when the computer start checking do not cut it short wait until it is over, it takes time but if you cut it short it might mess up your hard drive.

Right click your disk drive 2 - Properties - Tools - Error Checking (check now) - and check both boxes to automatically fix and yada yada... it will probably tell you that you need to reboot. It will scan your hard drive for errors and attempt to fix them.
Hopefully nothing too much is wrong but it's possible you have a bad hard drive OR the better of the two - hopefully it's just a fixable error caused by windows.
If the scanning doesn't help then check the warranty

OK if its only 3 moths old the manufacturers warrenty is still in effect they are good for 12 months from the purchase date. It Does sound like you have a failing hard drive which the warrenty will cover. I would bring it back tot eh place you bought it and they should cover the manufacturers warrenty. Or contact HP directly and they should be able to repair the issues for you. Otherwise Any geek Squad precinct should be able to address your issues. But they can only cover the manufactures warrenty if you purchased the unit at Best Buy. If you dont want to lose your data Go to your local Geek Squad precinct and they should be able to do a data backup for you. However if the drive failed you'll need to contact my precinct directly in minnesota since we do advanced data recoverys. our number is 612-343-1028.

Its sounds like indeed you are having a hard drive failure. You should start shopping for a new hard drive, eventually you will probably see the blue screen of death. The programs are having problems reading the data on the hard drive, thus the slowdown

permit me preface by making use of keeping that i'm an authorized Dell and HP Reseller. I have not have been given something against Macs in any respect. in fact, i'm fantastically inspired by making use of the present Macbooks. in case you go with the Microsoft working device, the Dell Vostro computer has been my contemporary %. for appropriate value for lowend laptops. for my section, you're comparing apples to oranges. they do no longer study to a minimum of one yet another as they the two have distinctive reward. My expert opinion: Macbooks - good (geared up on Unix platform), good classes, straightforward, greater inflexible standards, greater appropriate video modifying potential, potential to run XP rather much (making use of utility). Dell Vostro - Comes with XP or Vista, versatile with utility, numerous hardware strategies, less costly. i choose to advise you communicate on your instructors first and ask what they are going to be making use of. finally, you will discover much less issues in case you whichever platform they're making use of.
