I depends on what type of use. Gas mileage under towing, under highway driving, city driving or off roading.
Most of the full size can be modified to be more fuel efficient. Just stick to the basics of fuel efficiency, accelerate moderately, avoid jack rabbit take offs, keep your tire pressures maintained, avoid big oversize tires, maintain the alignment of the wheels, and keep the truck in good tune.
To get the most you can modify the intake air induction system from stock to a knn cold air induction kit (or similiar kit), advance your ignition timing with a jet performance control module, increase the exhaust flow by adding a high flow muffler. These simple modifications can severely increase the fuel efficiency on any truck you buy.
My advice, find a truck of your taste, buy one with a small v6 for maximum fuel efficiency or the smallest v8 available. Then just modifying it how you see fit.

As far as milage goes, an S-10 or a Ranger with a 4 cylinder and a manual trans will get fairly good milage, 25 or so at least. I don't know about the new colorado, but I'd assume that they are about the same. Steer away from the Dakota, since every one of those I've seen has gotten lousey milage, and you can't get one with anything less than a weak and thirsty v6.

toyota tacoma regular cab with a 5speed manuel transmission. gets the best mileage i've ever seen. dont go domestic unless ur looking for reliability, than go ford. they last well over 300k miles with no problem. or a dodge diesel truck. they get good mileage and last longer than regularly fueled vehicles.

How about you give us an idea of what you plan to buy (new, used) and what you plan to use the truck for (towing, hauling, daily driver) and maybe we can be of more help.
Do you want a full size, midsize, or compact truck? Manual or Automatic? Shortbed or longbed? 2WD, 4WD, or AWD?
I'd also do my research on Edmunds.com. They list the estimated mpg for most trucks there.

Toyota - without a doubt, especially if you're talking about a small pickup.
