I am now twenty one weeks and will have to have an amnio done in about a month. Is there a higher risk when the amnio is done after the normal time frame?

The risks of miscarriage or injury to the baby would theoretically be higher as the fetus gets older and bigger.

As well, consider the reason for doing the amnio in the first place. Often it is being done to diagnose a condition for which the couple may choose to terminate. There is a finite window in which therapeutic abortion can be done. Some centres will not perform abortions after 19 weeks and 6 days gestation.

Where I live, we have a choice about whether we want an Amniocentesis done or not. Just having the test done can be enough to cause a miscarriage. My doctor told me it's a test to see if the baby has Down Syndrome or not. To me, why would you want to put your babies health at risk just to find out something you can't change in the first place? Good Luck!
