The word democracy comes from Greek - two words, which translate to mean, an aristocracy of the people. In other words, a leadership chosen/elected by the people. The first democracy in history was established in the city of Athens in c600BC - it flourished for about one hundred years; a period more usually known as the Golden Age of Greece.

The longest continuous parliament in the world is the Tynwald on the Isle of Man. The Tynwald is now about one thousand years old.

Ancient Greeks were the first to actually write down Democracy as a philosophical and political system. Though, it should be said, their view of Democracy was based around the idea that only the educated and wealthy would be allowed to vote.

However, doubtless, there were many cultures were the idea of 'voting' was in place before Greeks.

Greeks, should be remembered that ancient Greece wasn't an actual country in the normal way of looking at things. each city was independent of each other, with their own devolved goverment, king etc. they fought each other constantly esp Athens and Sparta, who vied for dominance of the area.

states often invaded each other, macedonion's kings- Phillip and later his son Alexander were particularly adept at this. God I'm a boffin!
