Today, we find that we are becoming more reliant on computers and technology. Technology is exponentiating at a rate, I've heard, in which the power double every 18 months. Soon, we will get to the point where we can no longer live without computers, and if there was a major failure, or an electromagnetic pulse, we would die.

Some people advocate using microchip technology to enhance human abilities, and some radical believers want to replace human intelligence with artificial intelligence once its power exceeds our own.

I find this way of thinking to be absolutley ridiculous. We should enjoy life now, not push an ideal of "progress" in our minds that would completely ruin human life, and eventually replace it. I think that we are moving to fast, and only trying to move faster. We are not ready for this surge in technology, so I believe it should either stop, reverse, or probably what most would agree with, at least low down.

So I ask, are we too far ahead of ourselves?

We are moving much too fast. I think that technology, along with the need of people to constantly push forward and find out more about 'why' and 'how', and to make things better and easier, is going to be the ultimate DOWNFALL of humanity. Even where we stand now, if there were to be some disaster and the world was without electricity and plumbing, over half the people in the USA would die out because people don't have a clue how to survive. It would be total, utter chaos... people might even end up killing other people for food, or to steal the resources they have, just to survive. THAT is a scary thought. I hope I'm long gone before that happens.

You ask a good question and make a good point....but think about it....this same point was probably made when the light bulb was invented or for that matter the wheel. Without the surge in technology over the recent past, you wouldn't even be able to ask this question to a million people on Yahoo, you would be sending it in a smoke signal hoping the wind didn't blow.....

I think technology will advance as fast as humans can adapt and accept it and no faster....

Sort of like the Republican House......

When it gets out of control it will be slowed by the same people that created it.

Your correct regarding technology outpacing our ability to wrestle with the moral and ethical principles involved. People in general need to live a more simplified life. We are not designed to work 16 hours and day hopped up on coffee and sugar. Look into the concept of intentional living and see what you think. The true radicals of the future will be those who reject our current dependency on a growth based economy and technology.

We are actually FAR FAR behind our technology.
Humanity has lost much of the acient technology from the Greeks, and Romans.

When the Library of Alexandra has been set fire to, we lost the tech that would have "saved" us from the Dark Ages.

The steam engine, medical improvements (equal to that of the 1800s), steam cannons, cranes and buildings blueprints.

We lost it all, and now we are behind.

As far as the Transhumanism part of your question, you do know no one is asking you to implant anything...

If anyone ask you to inject or plant anything into yourself, it's usually those who desire control. They will use the excuse of secruity or improvement. If that be the case, fight them with everything you got.

We are far behind in all aspects of life, but it does not mean the world may move fast. It is scary, but remember the only constant is you... You will always be yourself.

Everything you say in the first paragraph is possibly and more than likely true; I have even heard that civilization has destroyed itself doing this sort of thing once before. There is a book about it, needless to say. However, our evolution as humans, our consciousness and collectiveness is barely in Pre-School. We may destroy ourselves with technology, but we better brush up on our Self-Awareness Issues. So, in one way the answer to your question is yes, but in another way........We are so unevolved it's PATHETIC.

I don't believe so.

We will not be going back to amish or even caveman days anytime soon. There is too much intelligence out there for that to ever happen. We simply have to go with the flow and not let anything bad influence our familys.
