Hi there !
Some amount of mental tension is bound to be there when you are undergoing tests like these..okay ?
But...dont you think.........
1. that this "little tension" is better than having a "bigger headache" in later years by NOT doing the test now..?
2. that this test is a "routine test" which is being done on all females after some years of age when they are at risk ?
3. that it is the test advised by the gynacologists as a protocol ?
4. that if you are severely tensed up, a little bit of open and frank discussion with the consultant would have reduced the tension ?
5. that you can utilise the "three days of waiting"
for reports, by listening to some good music, or some good reading ..or spend some more time with relatives or family members which will definitely reduce the pressure you are undergoing..?
RELAAX...
everything will be okay..
after all its for a good cause..
best wishes...

You need to relax. It's not like it hurts or anything. It's just something all us women have to do once a year. Do you have a male doc? if so, try switching to a female, that might make you more comfortable. I have a female and she's super nice and we just chat the whole time and before you know it they're done. It such a quite painless check-up just like any other check-up, you shouldn't be so nervous.

You have to think about something else. You have to have a conversation with the nurse or doctor about a subject completely unrelated to what is going on. It is a natural procedure and all women have them done. It is uncomfortable to everyone, you just have to take deep breaths and get through it! Good luck.

It's so hard to do when you're afraid!

All I can say is to practice. Close your eyes and practice relaxing all your muscles. Concentrate on finding the tense places and relaxing them. It might not work everytime, but the more you do it, the easier it will get.

Hang in there.

I just remember that the doctor does this all the time and it's old news to him or her. I usually talk non stop, though, just to keep the focus on anything but what's going on down there! Doctors have to know we hate those visits and probably try to get it done as quick as possible. It'll be over before you know it! Don't sweat it!

It sounds really stupid, but I sing those silly kids songs. You really can't be tense when singing "mary had a little lamb". And my ob/gyn gets a kick out of it

Yes, those tend to be uncomfortable. Basically all I do is sit there and think of something else.
