You do not have to run it 24/7 if it can keep the pond filtered. You can install a timer on the pump to run it somtimes and through trial and error you will have to adjust the run times and the off times to suit your pond conditions

We had a 150 gallon pond with 2 turtles and a few goldfish and we would turn the pump on for 4 to 8 hours a day just for aeration. During the summer when it is really hot there is no way you can keep the algae away completely. You can use liquid barley or barley straw to help slow it down.
