One of two things are causing this.
1. Your monitor only supports 800x600 resolution. Fix: New monitor.
2. Your video card doesn't have enough memory to support anything higher than 800x600. Fix: New video card.

I had that one time. turned out that I had not read the instructions or followed them correctly. In most every instanance of a new Snd/Vid driver, in Windows, the old Driver has to be removed, re-boot, then install the new driver. Then Re-boot, and the new driver will set in.
This is a common occurance with .dll and .exe dependant drivers.
When you are at the Driver Download Site, and is best to view the Manufacturers Site, they will have the How to install this device, read that, print it out, and you probablyy get it fixed fast.

It could also be your video card is damaged. Ususally caused by a blown capasitor or a short from dust blocking connections.
