American would have to be who is born in America (North, Central office, South). As well as who he is born in the Europe is European.

True, you are American for being from these two continents in the Western Hemisphere.

However, the idiomatic common usage of the term "American" is like an abbreviation of "United States of America."

So when an angry Middle Eastern person shouts "Death to America!" Does he hate people in Guatemala? No. He means USA. There is no "Usan" or "Statian" or "United Stater." If one is from the United States, he or she is called "American."

So you are American in some sense for being from South America, but not really. Apply for citizenship in the USA and you will be.

Besides, since when were people classified by continents? Who really cares where you are from. Drawing these divisive lines of race and nationality is pointless. You are who you are. The rest is just bickering semantics...

I think concept of continents (7 in number) has only come into the forefront in the past century. Before that your nation was what you associated with. And since 1776 those in the US called themselves Americans instead of colonists. The British and other Europeans in the 18th century and before referred to the Western Hemisphere as "the AmericaS"
I think today you are a citizen of the US or not.

If I understand your question, I think you should specify which continent when refering to being an "American".

I other words you are South American. I might be called North American. See, when speaking of a broad region like that shortening the name can cause confsuion.

ERRR Wrong.

Born in South America? You're South American. It's a continent not a country. I'm born in Canada - therefore I am Canadian. The reasons why people born in the USA can call themselves 'American' is because they actually have the word AMERICA in their country name. It'd sound ridiculous calling them Unitedians or Statians, so we call them American. BTW - why would you want to call yourself American anyways? Most places you travel don't like Americans, especially in Europe and Asia. Known fact, some American tourists wear Canadian flags just so that they don't get mugged or screwed over.

huh??? You are not an American unless you were naturalized as a US citizen or born in the USA or born to American parents visiting another country. People from South America do not call themselves American...they call themselves whatever the national orgin is....ex. Brazilian, Guyanese, etc.

Stop. Yes the coutry is THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, but its called America for short and since its the only damn country on both continents with the name AMERICA in it, we get to use it OK.

Damn, go do something useful like donate food to a shelter.
