Make it a charity event.
Charge for tickets and donate the money to a charity. Or, allow kids admission if they bring a canned food for a food drive.
Address all their other concerns: Who will monitor the event? What parents will be involved? When will it take place -after school or evening? Who will run the music? Do you need a DJ and if so, what will it cost?
Will you have rules about attire, bringing in backpacks, getting a hand stamp, NOT leaving until the dance is over. You can have a Dance Policy printed out to show the principal you are serious.
(Your school) students only. Tickets are sold at school ONLY during the week prior to the dance. This provides time for processing tickets and verifying student eligibility to attend the dance. (i.e. overdue library books and disciplinary record clear.)
1. Every student must bring his/her student ID card and present it at the door of the dances.
2. Once students arrive at the dance, they must remain until the end of the dance unless they are picked up PERSONALLY by a parent of an individual whose name is on the student’s emergency card.
3. Students may not use and/or purchase another student’s dance ticket.
4. Students who are absent from school on the day of a dance will not be allowed to attend the dance.
5. Refreshment may be purchased at the dance and can only be consumed in the designated eating area.
6. Student Behavior Code expectation are in effect at all dances; this includes our dress code and NO GUM.
7. Inappropriate behavior at a dance (before, during, or after) will result in the loss of a school privilege.
Parents or guardians are expected to pick students up within 15 minutes after the end of the dance.

It is WAY better than PE and healthier. It helps a student learn to control their body more and become more flexible, which really can help in any other sport. At our school, the football basketball, etc. players are required to take the dance classes that are taught. This really improved their game, and they all won first place in their section for the state. It helps to learn how to prevent injuries and you don't cause them while dancing. It is also very fun!!!

Perhaps you can write a persuasive essay to him, or make a slideshow presentation. This looks professional, well thought out, and mature. If students can throw something like this together, then of course they can handle a dance. There's nothing that an adult likes more then a calm, mature student sharing their ideas in an organized way. So go ahead, make an appointment ahead of time, and prepare well. Even if it doesn't work out, you will still have gained your principal's respect! Good luck!

It's a great exercise and with music is the best way to get them involved, the obesity epidemic in this country and reduction of physical exercise do to new education demands is not helping. Children need to develope balance, agility, coordination, this is the sort of thing they were sent to schools to help develope in the first place. They are getting smarter with computers, but fatter, softer and clumsy as well. Plus at that age it will help reduce agression, anxiety, etc. and leave them feeling better afterwards.
