My son is 14 months old. He has his two bottom teeth, and that's it. Two days ago his two top teeth (not the very front ones, but the ones NEXT to the two front) are starting to poke through. But there are no signs of his top front ones coming through at all. Isn't that odd?? Someone said they had to have their childs gums cut to help it along. Have you had to do this??? Is it painful for them? Oh, it makes me cringe thinking about it. He doesnt see his doctor for two weeks. Thanks for anyones help

THANK YOU masha for being the only one to really answer my question!!! It sounded really painful and just crazy to do. But this woman swore she had it done, and i don't think i could ever have someone cut his gums. I can't even stand getting my teeth cleaned with out cringing!!

I'm pretty sure you shouldn't take medical advise from the morons on Yahoo. Go to a doctor or dentist if you really care for your kids instead of listening to stupid people you don't know.

I wouldn't do it but I know a lot of moms whop have. The reason I wouldn't is beause it can cause an infection in the gums and I'm sure it hurts enough teething let alone having an infection while a tooth is trying to come in!! My friends mother in law suggested putting a bit of rum on her finger and then using her fingernail to "cut:" through!! How horrible is that!! Rum AND cutting the gums!!

The teething gel works but you have to be careful how much you use because when they swallow it, it can numb their throats as well!

Cold teething rings or a damp facecloth that has been in the freezer for a few minutes helps ease the pain too. You can get holistic teething drops that are wonderful as well!!

Good luck!

I have two kids and have worked for years in a public library. I have never heard of this practice. (Sounds like an urban legend....) To my way of thinking, cutting the gums won't help the teeth PUSH through. I just checked a teeth eruption chart on clevelandclinic.com and see that your son is right on target with getting teeth.

Yes that is a possibility and yes it will help them come in. I had to have my gums cut and a permanent tooth pulled through when I was 16 because I had braces and they had to put a brace on it. Since it wouldn't come up on its own and obviously at that point never was, they had to cut the gums and pull it up. My sister is actually going to see about having it done to her 13 month old because none of his front ones will come in just the others.

My son took FOREVER to cut his teeth... He didnt get his bottom teeth until he was well over a year old... and his 2 top front teeth came in after his two teeth on the side of them came in... like your son's. I have never heard of kids getting their gums cut though.

I asked my dentist about it, thinking my kid was a freak of nature! He simply stated that kids whose teeth come in later tend to have healthier and stronger teeth and to no worry at all about it. They are all there now and he is 29 months old.

I've never heard that before... But maybe you should call the doctor on the phone and ask them. They can give you more advice on it and what it may be that is keeping the two front teeth back.

actually just let the kid develop naturally..he sounds like he's doing ok to me...the doctor/dentist will tell you if theres a problem...don't make one for yourself where none exist..
