Because the Earth's atmospere is very strong and has more gravity than the moon does. The moon as the Earth's energy. So the moon travels about 240 or more times in 1 year. And also, the moon only faces 1 side of the Earth. The other side is pure gravity-less and black. I hope my info. helps.

It formed already going around Earth, gravity keeps it from flying away, momentum keeps it orbiting and lack of friction in empty space keeps it from spiraling down to hit Earth.
