I haved no idea how Genghis Khan fits here, he died long before the reformation. Politically, Henry VIII comes to mind as well as Scandinavian History in the 16th Century. Socially, I would look up Martin Luther, which may lead you to many references to what you are looking for. Barbaric, look up Hugenots and Spanish Inquistion.

Also the Spanish Inquisition and the 30 years war come mind as far as brutality.

Also, if I remember correctly..... Politically, eventually the unification of different areas under either Protestantism or Catholicism contributed to the development of nationalism and the creation of new nation-states.
