I have lived on Lake Erie, the Gulf of Mexico, Severn River (near Annapolis, MD), and Pacific Ocean. Of these, the Pacific Ocean is best because its spectacular beaches and rocky cliffs.

Housing, climate, crime, and culture are all different at these four sites. Lake Erie homes are the cheapest for what you get; the PO homes are the most expensive. The LE locations have the most extreme weather swings and the PO coast has the least.

Crime is not normally an issue because waterfront homes are generally in crime free or minimum locations. However, stray off the waterfront and that's a different matter if you stray into a major city, like Cleveland, San Francisco, LA, or New Orleans. My current, PO location is on the beach at Monterey, CA.

Monterey is a small town; so it is relatively crime free. On the other hand, it is full of culture: Laguna Seca formula one races, pro am golf tournament at Pebble Beach, annual jazz festival, world renown aquarium, Cannery Row, and on and on. This is a small waterfront town with a big city culture. But the waterfront places exceed $1 million; some, like on 17 Mile Drive, exceed tens of millions. Waterfront homes are invariably high priced wherever you go.

PS: I also lived on the water in Coronado, a high priced, low crime, suburb of San Diego...almost forgot about that. Coronado is also high cultured, but not so much as Monterey.

San Diego, CA is fantastic. There's so much to do here, lots of recreational and cultural activities. The city is large but spread out. There's lots of small towns nearby and the weather is spectacular.

San Diego. Mmm! Drink it in. It always goes down smooth.

It's a fact, it's the greatest city in the history of mankind.

Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diago, which of course in German means "a whale's vagina."
