You should change your filter every 30 days. To tell you the truth cleaning you duct work is not really worth it. Like Rudolph said, you really do not want to get moisture in your system. Have your system checked out twice a year, once in the fall and the other in the spring time. Just make sure you keep that air filter clean. Also you can get your condenser coils and evap coil chemically cleaned . You can check into a filtering system and a germicidal light for bacteria. Use the vacuum to clean the vents off.

My husband. Assuming you don't have one your best help is your a/c & heating serviceman. Here's what I have learned. I was going to hire a vent cleaner and my a/c man said why? Either hot or cold air keeps the dust from collecting. If you have someone wash your vents you may be inviting mold if there is a place where moisture could collect. I'm sure there are answers to that but unless you have a problem why create one. I was told to change my filters at least once a month in the winter. You can do that yourself. That leaves the attic. Try vaccuming it yourself or call a maid service from the yellow pages.

I have more than 40 rentals and most are forced-air and it is not necessary to clean the ducting system all the time and moreover ...never.
consider this, when the unit is on and blowing it blows out all that in the ducts to your rooms, so to keep your ducts clean and maintain their cleanliness, when 1st turning on the unit left standing for some time, change out the filter $1.25 and do this each month for the next three months. Its cheaper than any service rep can offer.
the old adage is 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'
any dust about the house usually goes to the floor or on the furniture, and if you notice a lot of dust in your home, change your filter, it reduces the dust particles in the house, the back pressure on your A/C unit and therefore a longer lasting unit and cleaner home.
your a/c unit is a closed unit and other than a broken duct or damage to the ducts in the attic and the pulling apart of duct-work in the attic, stay out of your attic...there's nothing but insulation and spiders in the attic.
just change the filter unless the unit is broken, then call an HVAC man for service.

I was try to clean the vents and change the filters at least twice a year for health and safety reasons. I would also suggest that you call a heating service company to help with checking out your central heating before you start using it fully..

You should replace your furnace filter every 6 months. As far as having someone come out and clean the vents - look in the phone book under HVAC. I would assume a check up and vent cleaning would be around $100.

There are many companies who do vent cleaning. In the Bay Area and southern CA there's Coit and many others. Google for vent cleaning in/around your city/town. Also, check the yellow pages.

Call a furnace man and tell him you need your furnace cleaned and checked. Tell him you want the flu's cleaned as well. The filter's slide out on the side of your furnace and you can do that. Just pull them out stick them in your wash tub and wash them with cascade diswasher.

If there is no one to help maintain your system, get a service contract from your supplier, call your gas or oil company. This will also assist you if you ever have a breakdown, it's good insurance against catastrophe.
