Go for it! If you're serious about being a writer, start hammering out that story. Don't give up. Set yourself a time and place to write every day, a certain length of time (at least fifteen minutes) or a certain number of pages (at least two).

Now how to get started. Well, it's usually best to start in the middle of things (in medias res, the ancients called it) -- that is, at an exciting point where the story is really gettin' interesting. Then you can go back and fill in the background details.

Try this: make a list of your five favorite books. Check 'em out again. (1) How do they begin? (2) How are the main characters first introduced? (3) How does each author fill you in on what you need to know that happened before the story began? (4) What questions are you left with at the end of the first chapter? (5) What is the very first sentence of each one of them like?

The first chapter is the hardest part. After you've looked at your favorite authors, just strike out on your own. After you get going, the writing will come easier. Don't stop and worry about the beginning. Just keep going.

Most writers come back and revise the openings of their stories many, many times. But you gotta start somewhere.
