...I think the gag here was willie memorized and practiced some grandiose greeting/speech that didn't seem like it was very appropriate due to the unpredicted reaction of his guests so he just let it dwindle and fade out...in the back of my mind when i heard that I thought not many people would get that...

Willia Wonka is a reclouse with little connection to the outside world. He has lived alone for years, the above quote is just a reflection of his child like inspiration, The Earth saying hello to the stars.

There was a song from the 60s called "Good Morning Starshine", which was a kind of hippy song about the wonderment of life

I don't know if this line has more meaning than I think, but from what I gathered, he's really strange and this is the type of thing he says when he is just speaking freely. Notice that he wrote out things to say on notecards so he would speak more normally. Maybe we are supposed to think that the "normal" things he says are all rehearsed.

I love that line!! I love it because it is so random and it really highlights how he is so socially inept but trying!! Johnny Depp was absolute genius in that movie.

its the opening line to the musical "hair". since wonka was a bit reclusive, he decided to try the line out on the first people he saw, thinking they would recognize it. they didnt.

it's a line from an old 60's song, it's supposed to represent how long he's been away from the public
