THey are also tall and skinny - they've not been trimmed - I don't think- ever. We are selling our house in the summer and I want the yard to look nice and neat - I don't really have a big concern about the blooms this spring - not as much as the shrubs looking tidy. Thanks!

of course you can trim them...in fact azaleas greatly benefit from being cut back, especially if they've become tall and spindly. I too live in the southeast and this time of year is when I usually trim them. The buds haven't yet formed, so they will bloom according to the amount of greenery left on the bushes.

Azaleas should be pruned after they bloom, before they set buds for spring blooming. Wait until after they flower, then prune away. In the spring add Epsom salts around the drip line -- cheap effective fertilizer.
