Boy is THAT a loaded question.

From personal experience I prefer Nvidia cards (ATI had more driver problems in the past), but nowadays both are excellent . Right now the highest end gaming cards you can buy are Nvidia's 8800 series which is WAY overpriced, but rest assured ATI will release something to beat it- then Nvidia will respond and so on...

It really comes down to what your motherboard supports if you're looking at Crossfire vs SLI.

In the realm of more reasonably priced cards, I'd take the GeoForce 7950GTX or a Radeon X1900XTX- just figure out what your budget is, then head over to GPUReview and compare different cards. Depending upon your price point, either company may have the better option.

I was going to say if you ask 100 people that question it will probably end up 50 for ATI and 50 for Nvidia, however it looks like Nvidia has taken an early lead. I also prefer Nvidia because of their drivers.

Its a personal opinion. I have always been a fan of Nvidia. for the fact both ATI and Nvidia have always had strong hardware. but Nvidia has always been better with the software and drivers for their cards. But as of late ATi has become much better. If i knew what you wanted to do with the card i'de be able to recomend a specific coupld of cards to help you out.

Nvidia.

They have the best drivers, they perform far better with OpenGL (which ATI notoriously neglects), they have better driver support for alternative operating systems, and right now they are leading the pack speedwise with their new DX10 card.

It depends on if you are going high-end, medium or low-end. I regularly check pcworld.com and tomshardware.com for their ratings and reviews.

Also MAKE SURE you look at user reviews of the cards. Some crap out on you after 9 months, skimp on accesories, have terrible warranties/technical support or do not include overclocking utilities.
