Friend - I think for each person the meaning of life may be different. For me to serve my God, to try and love others, the love of my family and friends, all give meaning and purpose to my life. GBU

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

Well, as you can see from the above comments, there are many approaches to this question. Personally, I have found that doing work you find fullfilling gives a certain amount of meaning to life.

tough question. it's been asked many times since humans became advanced enough to wonder and had enough free time to stop and think about it. i doubt that even the 'best answer' will come close to providing us with a good one. it's a lot of things. the answer is probably different for every living organism. the meaning of life for a sponge couldn't be the same as for you or me, could it?... or could it?

Some believe there is no meaning to life, that we are an accident in the universe, made up of star material, and we have no more meaning than the moon and stars. But since we are here, I think we each have to find our own meaning for existence. Biologically, the meaning of our lives is to create more life, to ensure the survival of our species. All species have this drive. Look at the salmon which swim upstream to lay eggs and then die. Or the penquins who stand starving on a freezing ice floe in order to protect one little egg. Do they conciously do this? No, it is something ingrained in them to do this for the survival of their species. But humans want more meaning than that, so we make up things such as religion to give us more meaning. We also yearn for a perfect love. For me, the love of friends and family give meaning to my life. I hope you have that in your life, too.

Life is a wonderful gift from the creator of all that exists. It is our opportunity to experience love but also hate, joy but also sorrow, kindness but also selfishness, mercy but also injustice. You have important work to do during life and important choices to make concerning all of these experiences. Hopefully, you fulfill in your own way the flowering of your own spirit in your own unique way so that you may return to God as a spiritual being that is a wiser, kinder, more loving and in all other ways a closer representation of God who made us in his/her image.
