Most airlines now 'force' overweight passengers to purchase two tickets to accomodate the larger frames in the smaller seats. This should have been done and if so. there should be a vacant seat next to him. If not.. the airline overbooked and sold that 'overflow' seat twice.. once to him and once to someone else.
I would address this immediately. First with him and explain that you don't want to raise the armrest and that you do not wish to share your seat with him. Then, contact the flight attendant and request a seat change. If he/she balks at the idea, explain the situation and again ask for a seat reassignment even to first class if necessary. This usually works but there is the possibility that you will still have to sit next to Mr Fats. However, you have raised the complaint with the Flight Crew and when you deboard you can file a complaint with the airline.
Hope this helps and I feel your pain!

This happened to me, too! I let him lif the armrest, and also let him put his drink on my tray when they brought the drink cart through the aisle.
I was feeling really good about myself, thinking that karma or something was going to reward me.
When the plane landed, the lady ACROSS the aisle from me said "ok honey, ready for the drive home?" and I realized what a chump I was for putting up with him. SHE could have shared her tray space and her personal space!
On the other hand, it's over now and I'm still happy and he's probably still 500 pounds, and that can't be a very satisfying situation for him to be in.
Edit: Wow, I like keepitsafeto2think's answer better!

Tell him to go on a diet.
Seriously, ask the stewardess to speak to the Captain.(Believe it or not, they are required to arrange a meeting between you and the Captain).
Then, simply have the Captain talk to the Fat Man. If the problem is solved, that is fine.
IF the problem is not solved, be very cordial, tell everyone that you understand, write down everyones name, and when you land, get an attorney and sue the Airline.

If you dont want him pressing up against you and hanging off the other side tell him he needs to buy two seats if he doesnt fit in one. Obviously its too late so tell him you paid for your seat, you dont want to give it up, not even part of it. He can pay you to let you let him share part of your seat :-).

Be polite about it and help him out. Then maybe quietly have a word with a steward/stewardess in the back and ask if there are any spare seats you could move to as you think he would be more comfortable with no one next to him. Remember always be polite, he is human too just a little bigger than some.

Ask the flight attendant for 4 small bottles of Jack Daniels for me, and one package of peanuts for large Marge and go make myself comfortable in the goddamn bathroom. Rather sit with leg room in the nasty bathroom than nuts to butts with that.

In my case, the armrest would probably already BE up, so it wouldn't matter. Now if there were three of us in one row, THAT might get a little tight!

you paid for your WHOLE seat, if he wanted 2 he should've bought 2. Tell him he can spill over onto your chair if he pays for it. Then ask to sit somewhere else
