Western Society has had a massive turn around in recent years and has as a result, assimilated cultural practices and belief-sets that were once thought arcane and dismissed by the western world's concept of spirituality... Nowadays, there are REAL, actual, living, practicing Shaman here, in the western hemisphere.

I'm actually going to a workshop on Soul Retrieval, given by a Shamanistic healer who has participated in clinical trials of shamanic healing funded by The National Institute of Health’s research grant carried out by researchers at Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Oregon.

With the advent of institutions like the Foundation for Shamanic Studies and Sandra Ingerman’s Teacher Training in Advanced Shamanic Healing practices, it is completely possible, in western society to have a job, or profession AS a Shaman... the sky's the limit!

Other than working as an ACTUAL Shaman, the closest thing would be as a Spiritual Mentor, in more mundane circles, a pastor or minister, and for the atheists and agnostics, a counselor or therapist...

Western society is very out of touch with nature, so therefore the only profession that you will find is as a shaman. Shaman's are experts at soul retrieval and traveling between worlds.

Maybe a preacher who moonlights as an astronaut? :-)

The internet.

The shaman's role in prehistoric civilization is contact with the unknown. The shaman separetes him/herself from the normal flow of the tribe, even that of human thinking. And thus he/she can answer questions, solve problems, light the way.

Just like the internet.

Minister

if you list every thing a shaman does and is responsible for
you will find a minister does that too.

part of the minister's job description includes tending to the sick
in body as well as mind.

ministers also practice such things as laying on the hands and faith healing.

part of the ministers job is to teach the communities children

A REALLY GOOD SUPPORT PERSON/COUNSELOR. But not necessarily a psychologist/psychiatrist. I know. A shaman can only help bring out what is in you in the first place.

good question. Shamans are holy men. I would think that pastors fit that bill or any type of priest. Just my opinion only though. I would think that they would have to serve the people and put themselves last.
