"The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" by Ernest Hemingway
"The Dead" by James Joyce
"The Midlife Crisis of Dionysus" by Garrison Keillor
"A Diamond as Big as the Ritz" by F. Scott Fitzgerald
And although I read them a LONG time ago, I'll throw in
"For Esmé - with Love and Squalor" and "Teddy" by J. D. Salinger
Oh yes, there are some stories by Agatha Christie with the character Harley Quin. These are quite eerie, but enjoyable.

Steven King has awesome short stories. Although some may argue literary merit of a "horror novelist"... consider the fact that he wrote "The Shawshank Redemption". I also really like "The Long Walk" and "The Langoliers"
Although, I guess both of those are actually novellas...
I'm with Green Girl and KC - those are two of my other faves. (Is "the fog" is actually called "the mist"). But I REALLY like "The End of the Whole Mess".
