Save yourself time and money and purchase a MAC.
Apple has none of the problems that plague PC types.
I have owned my iBook G4 for three years and "never" had the computer crash.
A refurbished Powerbook, MacBook Pro can be purchase for around $1500.
The new duo core MacBooks enable you to run Windows if you would like or you can use the Mac OS X operating system. The OS X operating system is far superior to anything offered in the PC marketplace.

Your HP that started "freezing" simply needs attention, and can be fixed for cheap or free. Deciding to chuck it and buy a new one is like junking your car when all it needs is an oil change and a new air filter.
However, if you feel the need to spend money, you can buy a really fast computer with a monitor and keyboard for a heck of a lot less than $2000 from any retailer or computer shop.
Dell has some sweet deals going on.

I would go with a Dell. I work for a medium sized midwestern bank bank, and all of the PCs they use are dells. Of the 350 in the building I work in, we only have one go bad about every 2 weeks, and it's usually the power supply, so no data is lost.
If you order it, do it over the phone, so that you can describe what you want to the person, instead of having to pick from ambiguous choices on the website.
If you want one that is going to last a while, get a Pentium D procesor about about 3 ghz, 1 gig of RAM, a PCI-Express graphics card, and 2 SATA hard drives that are at least 50GB each.
The rest of it is pretty strightforward, but I figured it would be good to be specific on the more technical stuff

Dell will probably be your best bet in terms of getting the most bang for your buck. Dell gets a bad rap since they moved their help desk operations overseas, but they are still decent machines. HP also has good value, but I've come across some noisy hard drives and fans in some of their systems that make me a little nervous. Check out www.gotapex.com for some daily PC deals. That should give you some idea of the deals to be had out there.

Under $2000, your choices are endless. You can get a good computer for less than $600. If your HP is only a year old, have it repaired it is probably just running slow because of spyware or registry issues. Any good tech can fix that, heck of alot cheaper than buying another computer. Run your restore CDs if you have to. Just remember if you do you will lose your data so back it up first.

DELL, HP and other brands of PC's like that are not very good. I own a computer business and i know the tricks of the trade. DELL, HP etc cut down on the component quality and price to make cheaper systems so they can earn more money... this is not just me attacking them, thats what happens.
You can get a very good PC for under $2000, visit your local PC shops and tell them what you have put here. Off the top of my head i would say something like this would be fine for you...
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.14Ghz
1GB DDR2 RAM
120GB SATA II Hard Drive
nVidia 6200 128MB
Dual Layer DVD Burner
17" LCD Monitor
Windows XP Home Ed
2.1 Speakers (decent)

These people are all wrong all these companys have similar hardware. Its all up to you. Sony is overpriced, Dell is proprietary, HP/Compaq , Gateway, Acer, etc are all good choices but it depends on what you need it for. If you want any type of computer remember to get extended warranty. You can find just about the highest end computer under 2 grand. Just makes sure what you need it for you dont want to over pay for performance you dont need.

- Stay away from HP, Compaq, Gateway, Acer.
Go with a IBM (now Lenovo), Sony or possibly a Dell (last resort). I buy computers for my company all the time. I always buy IBM's they are the most reliable, and you can get a good machine for under $700, maybe beef it up a little, for more $. Try PcMall as a vendor for it. Good Luck.....

Oh man, for $2000 you can buy a kicka@@ system, with all the useful gadgets you might need for school. I'd say check dell since they have all the deals, or try going to bestbuy or MicroCenter stores, they have plenty of cheap computers from different manufacturers and will offer you a good warranty.
Good luck.

Dell Computers. They have a nice interface to choose what components are available on your desktop or laptop computer. Just choose and/or remove items in order to meet your computing and budget needs. Software problems are the most likely cause of "freezing" in computers especially Windows based machines. Computer stores have software fixes for the common PC problem when you cannot fix it with the bundled software and Windows diagnostics that came with your current workstation.
