I cant seem to get anyone to even speak to me in game.... what gives?

If you use the "/looking for group" channel and ask for a guild of group you might have a little more luck...or you can even try the /1 General Chat channel...... don't give up....

joining guilds and groups is completely different. I'll focus on guilds since the guy above me told you about groups.
Best place to find a guild is in a home city such as Ironforge. You can advertise yourself if you want, and occasionally this will work to join a guild, but you will end out getting a crappy one or low quality one. Just sit there and maybe ask if any guilds are recruiting... sooner or later someone will send you a tell.
Better way: If you have friends that you play with get into their guild. Even if it is just some random guy that you grouped with. Sooner or later you will realize that there are lots of differences with guilds and you will find what you are looking for in one.

Depending on your level, generally the best place to find groups is at the actual location of the place where the quest takes place. Generally just politiely asking in general channel will find a few people who also need the quest.
To find guilds, I generally have the best luck joining with my friends, but if your friends are not playing, find the group members that you enjoy being with the most and join thier guild.
