Why they lost:
They lost because they were mean and let it show. They lost because they were bullies and kicked sand in too many faces. They lost because they said their opponents were godless criminals who wanted Osama to win. They lost because of Iraq. They lost because they kept saying the economy was great to people with bills and pink slips crumpled on the kitchen table. They lost because voters wanted to let the other team screw up for a change. They lost because fourteen months after Katrina, New Orleans is still a wasteland. They lost because of Mark Foley, Macaca, Jack Abramoff and Ted Haggard, the evangelical preacher with the male prostitute and the meth. They lost because Katherine Harris just wouldn't go away. They lost because people thought it over and decided they liked the Constitution the way it was. They lost because of that weird coin scandal in Ohio. They lost because there are limits. They lost because Bush thought it made a difference if he stopped saying we had to "stay the course." They lost because women don't want to be forced to bear their rapists' babies, even in South Dakota, and they don't want the attorney general investigating their abortions, even in Kansas. They lost because Bob Sherwood's mistress called 911 saying she had locked herself in a bathroom because he was trying to strangle her. They lost because they lied so much and stole so much, the other side started to look honest. They lost because you can only outlaw gay marriage once, and they'd already done that in most places. They lost because they couldn't explain why the mission wasn't accomplished and all those people were dead. They lost because torture is not just wrong, it's embarrassing. They lost because Jesus didn't want them for a sunbeam after all.

Bush and those around him like Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Rove have a lot to do with it. America is tired of deaths and pouring money into an illegal war that has no strategy. They are also tired of being lied to. They are tired of hearing people who disagree with failed policies being called traitors or cowards. Especially when the so-called traitors and cowards are veterans who have proved their loyalty and courage and the chickenhawk name callers have proved their cowardly self preservation in past wars. They are also tired of good people who support the Constitution and human rights being judged as godless and evil.
It's not just because of this, though. Congress itself has given the administration a pass by rubber stamping Bush's unconstitutional agenda. People are also fed up with corruption. Cunningham, DeLay, Abramoff, Foley et al have as much to with the Republicans losing as Bush.
Of course in rejecting the Republicans, voters were also accepting the Democratic promise of higher wages, health care reform, educational opportunities, and energy independence with cleaner alternatives.

Democrats won because they are the only viable alternative to the failed leadership and policies of the Republican majority. They ran a campaign against Bush, Republican corruption, and failed policy in Iraq, not on any particular policy platform.

Bush is definitely a lousy president. But the fact is, the GOP leadership in Congress was just as bad. They were fiscally reckless, and failed to live up to their Constitutional responsiblities with regards to policing the Bush administration's power grab....
Good riddance.

The voters wanted real change in Washington...Bush, scandals, Iraq, and the 'do nothing congress' had a lot to do with the Democrats winning.

The surveys I read saw the biggest issues were corruption and the war. I am a Dem, but even I have to admit they didn't win, the Republicans lost.

As a friend of mine says: "Don't take the midterm elections as a
mandate from the voters, All those races were very close. Some
close to trigger automatic recounts.
