I'm about to be a father and my mother-in-law is dead set on naming my son Ezekiel, Zeke for short. My wife doesn't want to upset her mother, but I hate the name. When she asked me about it I told her " What, are we Amish?" and Zeke just sounds like white trash.

i personally like the name ezekiel, but i don't think i would name my own child that. i agree, zeke sounds dumb. you need to talk to your wife and help her realize that this is your child, not her mother's. Tell her mother that you appreciate her input and ideas, but you don't feel that name is right for your son. She should respect that and not bug you about it.

It is a reasonable name but definitely not Zeke for short.
Don't let your mother in law tell you what to name your child. You and your wife need to talk with the mother in law, sit her down and tell her that while you respect her opinion on what the child will be called, you really do not like the name Ezekiel.
Involve her in the name-picking process if you think she might feel rejected/excluded, but stand your ground if you really don't like a particular name. I'm sure you will all find a name that you all like and agree on.

I dont mind Zeke as a name (my friend's son is called Zeke short for Zechariah - not positive of spelling) but at the end of the day you and your wife are raising the child and paying for its clothing, food, education etc etc etc so surely you should together have the honour of choosing a name you like. Your MIL sounds a little domineering so perhaps think of a gentle way to talk to your wife about it and if you come up with a few names she likes then that might make it easier for her to talk to her mother. I agree with others about using it for a middle name and you can have several middle names if you dont even like it that way.
As for white trash....well ???? I don't really get that comment but you could just say it doesnt feel right for you to name your first child that. Your MIL will get over it if you don't name him Ezekiel but you never will if you do. Good luck!

i don't think Zeke is white trash. i think its a cool name. i know a great guy with the name Zeke and he is far from white trash. naming your son ezekial is a little odd i think. it's your baby you should have more say in what to name your child. maybe you and your mother-in-law can agree on some other name

OMG. DO NOT LET YOUR MIL NAME YOUR KID!! IF SHE WANTED TO NAME MORE KIDS, SHE SHOULD HAVE POPPED 'EM HERSELF!!!!
On a more reasonable note, Ezekiel is certainly a reasonable name for your son if you want him to get beaten up on a regular basis.
Naming your child is about you and your wife, not about not upsetting her mother. And if you hate the name, now is the time to assert your manhood and say absolutely not. You could compromise with Ezekiel as a middle name and go with something better as a first name.
I am 100% on your side about Amish and white trashiness.

Ezekiel is a great name. So is Zeke. I like it. If you don't like the name, don't use it. If your MIL likes the name so much, let HER use it! Honestly, you have to give your child a name you & he can live with. Your MIL is not the one signing the birth certificate with your son's name on it. You & your wife created this baby. You & your wife will raise this baby, pay his bills, and be responsible for him. One of the greatest pleasures & honors of being a parent is getting to name your own kid. Don't let MIL push either of you into a name you don't like. Good Luck!

I like Ezekial (Zeke for short). But if you don't like it, I think you and your wife should be the ones deciding what to name your baby, not your mother-in-law. I don't think that Zeke sounds like white trash and in fact I can't believe you would even use that term. Why should any name be assosiated with a derogatory term for someone who is poor and lives in a trailer? I think that's kind of dumb. As for your mother-in-law, it's really not her decision, I mean she can give suggestions, but it's still not her baby, so she doesn't get to name it.

Ezekiel is either some axe wielding whack job from a Children of the Corn sequel or it's some coal mining farmer who lives in a double wide.
Don't give in...when your kid is 50 and his name is Zeke or god forbid, Ezekiel, he is going to hate you and your mother-in-law will be worm food many times over.
Can you imagine a 35 year old named Zeke who doesn't like NASCAR and chaws Red Man every day?
I'm telling you man...this isn't what color of drapes we are talking about...this is your kid's name...stand up for him!!!

If you call him Zeke, it will be all good. I'm not fond of Ezekiel but Zeke is a cute name that fits a baby just as well as a grown man. Do it!
