Back in the 1830s American immigrants moved into Texas and started a rebellion when the Mexican government wouldn't let them own slaves. Texas became independent. Then in the 1840s they decided to become a state of the Union (USA, that is) and as a result of a squabble about the southern border of Texas the USA went to war with Mexico and took not only Texas but what are now the states of New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and California.

The California Gold Rush of 1849 took place when California was already part of the USA.

The Mexicans have always had a problem with immigrants. Nowadays, they have a huge problem with illegal immigrants from central america - including countries such as Guatemala. Illegal immigrants in Mexico have next to no rights, and there's far less tolerance of illegal immigration than in the US. Despite the fact that there's no real cultural barrier in terms of language, religion, race, or ethnicity. Go figure.

It makes me wonder why Mexican president Vicente Fox and many other Mexicans are so self-righteous and shrill on the topic of Mexican immigration to the US. It just seems so hypocritical.

By the way, in your studies, have you read about the fact that non-Mexicans (including US citizens) are not allowed to own or purchase land in certain "restricted zones"? That would include all land within approximately 62 miles of the Mexican border with any other country, and within 31 miles of the Mexican coast line?

It's amazing that this issue doesn't get more play. The issue of Mexico and its maltreatment of non-citizens is indeed a good topic for discussion. It's all part of that historical "huge problem" you mentioned.
