Dragon Quest VIII?

I'm looking for recipes for the Alchemy pot, tips in general and I'm curious if I upgrade Jessicah from a Wizard's staff to a rune staff or some other staff, will she lose her magical abilities?

Abilities aren't based upon weapons.

Go to http://www.gamefaqs.com/ for Dragon Quest VIII, and look in the special FAQs. I know that there's an alchemy pot recipe guide there.
