When I shut off my computer and charge it, it starts out charging with the purple light, but then when I wake up in the middle of the night, the light has turned red. If I unplug the charger for a few seconds and put it back in, it goes to purple (charging) again. I did this last night and it stayed purple until I woke up in the morning. However, when turned on, it has absolutely 0% charged. What could be wrong?

unfortunately, it sounds like the battery is dead and won't hold a charge anymore. laptop batteries do have a limited life.

Most likely you have a single cell thats 'dead'. You can tell if you (or someone electrically inclined) puts a voltmeter across the outside terminals of the battery and it reads less than the rated voltage (usually about 16.8 volts)
as far as the memory problem, its only NiCd (nickel cadmium) batteries that show that problem... most these days are either LiOn(lithium ion) or NiMh(metal hydroxide)
