In the USA a normal school course load is 4 or 5 courses for two semesters. Times four years that makes around 32 -40 courses to get a Bachelor's degree. Then to do a Master's degree you usually need the equivalent of two more years -- that is about 8 courses plus a Master's thesis, or if no thesis (and MA without a thesis is looked down on) maybe 15 courses. To get a PhD you need the equivalent of two more years of courses plus a dissertation that would normally take at least a full year of research and a full year of writing. There is a lot of variation in how this would work. Many schools, especially the ones that do not have very high reputations, have some shortcuts. They allow fewer courses, shorter dissertations or no dissertations, etc. THat is the way they entice students to come to their programs. The prestigious schools tend to require more because they are so famous that many students want to study there and the schools can take their pick of the students and make big demands of them. On the other hand, in many elite schools, they give ample financial support to the students. However, they only admit as many students as they can afford to give scholarships to. So in one school I was associated with, they had 300 apps and only enough money one year for a single student, so they only admitted one, even though dozens of students who applied were fully qualified.

Generally a Ph.D. program of study consists of a minimum of 60 semester hours of graduate-level course work beyond the bachelor’s degree and 24 semester hours of dissertation credit. Approved master-degree-level course work up to 30 hours beyond deficiency and prerequisite courses may potentially be included. A minimum of 30 hours of doctoral course work and 24 hours of dissertation and/or research are required to be taken at the university.
