Chuck Berry did some good non-soppy tunes in his day - mostly about musicians and cars. Seemed to work pretty well for him!

Sandi Thom sings about horses and music as well as love
There seem to be lots of politically active tunes about too...

Things that stir a person's childhood memories.
A perfect example of this is the Statler Bros. song "Do you remember these?" A song aimed at the children of the 50's, but it is a great song for any generation.
I also enjoy hearing a personal account of places in song.
