Because it's a Canadian game and has been passed down to Canadians through generations. It has been my family's sport. While I never played ice hockey (though I did play Cosom Hockey and figure skated for 11 years) I was constantly at the rink for my brother and father and friends in school, and before that, my parents were at the rink with their dads and so on and so forth. By the way, ever notice how most of the greatest hockey players of all time are CANADIAN. Ah, touche!

Canadians are so sparked about hockey because hockey is our sport and it's our life. Without hockey Canada would just be a peace country but with it we are the country to beat. Canada has the best hockey players in the world and nobody can stop us. The new Europeans ain't playing hockey they are scared to get hit. hockey in Canada is all about being hit and not being scared. Hockey brings Canada together and makes us a better country. that's why we are so sparked about hockey!

"What other sport are they the majority in? If you can think of another let me know." - lacrosse. curling. all skating sports. swimming. all rowing sports.
Hockey is a community sport similar to football in the south. You have the weather to run football year-round in the southern states. Canadians have ice.
Everybody gets to together at the arena to watch their family play and socialize. Just like football (or basketball) is the way out of the ghetto in the U.S., hockey is the same for rural Canada.
I know of a small town in Ontario that had a major fire in the summer destroying the only food and hardware store. The town's arena had to be converted into a make-shift place to buy the necessities. The weren't finished rebuilding in the fall and the stores wanted to stay in the arena for the winter. The mayor smartly ordered them out simply because the community couldn't handle the isolation of winter without their hockey.

It is the official national winter sport of Canada, where the game enjoys immense popularity, and is also the most popular spectator sport in Finland. Six of the thirty NHL franchises are based in Canada, but Canadians outnumber Americans in the league by a ratio of almost four to one. About thirty percent of the league's players are non-North American.[3] The sport's popularity in the U.S. is concentrated in certain regions, notably the Northeast, the Upper Midwest, and Alaska. This concentration helps to make ice hockey the least watched major sport in the United States, however it is by far the most watched in Canada. Nonetheless, in certain major U.S. cities (notably Buffalo, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, Chicago, Boston, Dallas, New York City, Philadelphia, and Denver) it is still a major competitor to basketball for winter sports fans.

You have to grow up in Canada to understand a Canadians love affair with hockey. During the winter we are totally immersed in our national game. With the development of artificial ice plants and the corresponding indoor rinks many of this generation are immersed in hockey and hockey schools year round.

It's difficult to explain to anyone who doesn't grow up in this culture, where hockey is just part of the national fabric.
Also, for those of us who are quite far north (where it's about -15 F right now), it's not like there's a lot to do outdoors in the winter besides skating and skiing. And that tendency towards cold weather just plays into pushing the popularity of the sport. We also have a huge number of rinks for our population, and kids just gravitate towards them from a young age.

Why're americans so sparked up about baseball? About NASCAR? You wait five minutes for some guy to throw the ball and you watch other guys drive around an oval track for a few hours. How's that entertaining? Hell, I'll have more fun driving around my block 400 times than watching some guy do it.
