Yes. You cant join at all without paying the initial dues. The only way you could possibly get around it is if u are REALLY close with the chapter president BEFORE you pledge. Dont try to befriend her solely for the reason of asking for a delayed payment plan cuz she'll probably boot u then & there.

As a private organization they can.
However, remember that you have to become a member first! This means pledging, and a semister of being a pledge, and then initiation.
In almost ALL you will have to pay dues, even during your pledgeship. If you cannot afford to be a pledge, most likely you will not be able to pledge.
However, your answer is, in most cases, a member that does not pay dues for a semister, becomes "in-active." That is, while they retain their membership, they are no longer allowed to be invloved in social events.
If you live at the house, there would be a problem. However, in most cases, you are required to pay for the semister, or year up front, which keeps an "evection" from happening.
There ARE cases where dues and fees can be waived, however, is most cases these are rare.
It's expensive to pledge and be a member of a social organization. I went to UF and was a Chi Phi, and can tell you that even today (many years later) some of the brothers I met are still today my best friends.
Good luck!

Yes they can. However, many sororities offer scholarships (check out your sorority's national website) and sometimes there are even scholarships specific to your chapter (only girls in your chapter may apply). Many sororities offer payment plans either monthly or by the semester. Most of the time, a good sorority will work with you to get your dues paid, you just have to put in the effort!

If you could not pay your dues in my sorority, you became inactive for the semester and were not allowed to participate in any of the events or use any of the privileges (house, etc). If you were still in default after graduation, you did not earn alumni status in the sorority.
If someone was experiencing hardship for a semester or 2, they could write a letter to the sorority chapter president and ask for their national dues to be paid out of chapter funds. These were limited cases, of course, and were subject to fund availability. The president would read the letter to the chapter (omitting the sister's name, of course) and the chapter would vote on whether or not to allocate the funds. Every time we voted, the motion was passed.

yes and they will. however, in many cases you can set up a payment plan to help you. dues are necessary to a sorority and if you cannot afford it, you should think twice.

You can also take on a really time consuming, hard to do job in exchange for your dues, room and board. In my house it was President and Treasurer.
If you cannot pay, and know it, don't go through rush please.
