Sexy, sophisticated, elegant, but a pain in the bum (well, more legs and back really!) as you have to keep checking that the seams are straight...
And with so many funky designs out there at the moment, you could just go for tights or hold-ups with a slinky pattern rather than just seamed stockings.

Seams can be very classy and sexy with the right dress, like a simple black cocktail dress. I wear them once in the while in very sheer black for very dressy occasions. They can look trashy if worn with more casual clothes.
