i really need more details, but here's a try: you are a single parent and you are afraid that your son's father is going to try to get back in your life and/or take your son away from you by any means possible.
or
your spouse is away all or most of the time and you really wish he was around to protect you and your son from something or someone you perceive as a threat.
the butter knife represents something that is only a little dangerous normally but could be lethal in the right hands.
