I bought 4 new tires in Oct. 2005. The place that I bought them from installed them and did the wheel alignment. I have had them rotated twice since then but my husband thinks they are worn more than they should be. The warranty states that the tread life is usable tread depth is the original tread depth minus 2/32nds of an inch. How in the world do I figure out what this means and if my tires are truly worn? Please don't say to take it back there because of course the tire place is going to say it's not. I need to know how to figure this out myself.

On your tire, in between the treads, is a small raised spot. This is called the wear bar. If its level with the treads, the tire needs to be replaced.

My tire company says to take a penny and stick it into one of the groves of the tire...if you see all of Abraham lincolns head then it's worn down further than you should be riding on. If it's not then it's not wearing down to quickly. Also if your car is older then the alignment will slip alot easier than on a newer car so it's possible that you might be wearing them down on the inside or outside not just straight down the middle. If this is the case then you need to have that checked out. Here's a catch though, if when you bought the tires they discounted the price for you most times, without telling you, by doing the discount the nullified the warranty on them in order to give you the cheaper rate. Also if you don't have proof that your tires have been rotated per the agreement to keep the warranty they can try to contest the warranty. If you do have to go back to the place where you got them just go knowing you might have a fight on your hands so go having all your ducks and paperwork history in a row.....Good luck.

Most tires have a wear bar built in. Look at the tread and you will see a small bar when it reaches the top it time for new tires. Also since you did not say what kind of tires or car, some sports cars do have tires that only last 20,000.

If you think the tire store is not being honest with you check at a second place, do you have shop you take your car?

get a tire tread depth gage at any walmart/ tire store/ auto-parts store get a measurement in 3 places in the tread on each tire, if any are 2/32s or less the tire is worn. if more than that it is good

UMMM, IF YOU HAD THEM REPLACED OVER A YEAR AGO, YOU SHOULD BE HAVING THEM ROTATED TO PREVENT WEAR AND TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE TIRE. ACTUALLY, YOU SHOULD BE HAVING THEM ROTATED EVERY 6000 MILES. TWICE IN ONE YEAR IS NOT ENOUGH.
