I have mine pierced and yes it did hurt but not when the actual needle went through (i think because it is so quick the brain takes time to register). It swells up double size for about a week afterwards and you will struggle to eat solid foods so make sure you have a big meal before you get it done. Make sure you take someone responsible with you and for goodness sake make sure they have a certificate from environmental health.
They MUST wear gloves
The needle should be DISPOSIBLE
They must check your tongue and mark it up properly to avoid veins etc.
Aftercare is VERY important. If the thought of having to rinse out you mouth with salt water after every meal for the next two weeks sounds like too much work then don't bother having it done because improper aftercare could lead to infection.
You will also need to go back in about 10 days to have the bar changed to a smaller one (after swelling has gone down).
and NO it shouldn't give you a lisp. I certainly don't have one and know many other piercees who don't either. It will only damage your teeth if you roll it across the top, otherwise it does no damage because it should never actually touch your teeth.

It's your personal interest. If you do, here's what happens.
For the first couple of weeks, it sucks to eat; you shouldn't have any carbonated beverages like beer or coca cola. Next, Don't eat rice because it could actually get stuck and you would have a possible infection. Don't eat salsa because that really hurt when I got mine done. that sure was dumb.
If you pay attention to what the piercing artist is telling you, you should have no problems with infection or anything.
I had a 14 gauge, and now it's a 4-gauge that I'm turning into a 2-gauge soon.

I did it 6 years ago. I took it out about 2 years ago for good b/c I just didn't like it anymore. I loved it though for the first couple of years I had it. It DID hurt. Especially about 15 minutes afterward. It hurt for about 3 weeks and I had trouble eating anything for a week. So, if you really want it, be prepared. I wouldn't do it again.
Oh, and if you do, don't get a plastic one ever!! I had a metal one and bought plastic balls to go on the ends and the plastic got stripped out where it screws in and when I was eating it came unscrewed and I swallowed it!

If that is what you want and it won't effect your job then I say go for it. I had one when I was in college. It really didn't hurt getting the piercing done. The only problem was the swelling and drooling afterward but even that didn't really hurt. It went down in about 2 days. Make sure that you are going to a professional piercer and that they have sterile needles and a good reputation.

Yes it hurts but that isn't even the issue. Do you realize how many germs live in your mouth/saliva? I wouldn't want to even kiss a man with a pierced tongue let alone have him go down on me just because of that. Tattoos still rule honey. Go get one that says Maggie and you will be fine from now til your eternity.

You should only get it pierced if you really want to. If you have to ask here, I would reconsider.
Truthfully:
Pain is relative and varies greatly from person to person. No one can tell you how bad it will hurt you, people can only speak for themselves. Most piercings are done and over with very quickly and the pain comes from the following days when your tongue is swollen, sore and its hard to eat.

Hi as a dental nurse I would advise against it as most people it will cause them to lisp! it can also go wrong. Apparenty its quite sore for a few days but then not too bad. If you do decide to have it done I would advise you get some chlorhexidine mouthwash to use for 3 days 3times a day afterwards as this will speed up the healing process.

Have you never accidentally even bitten your tongue...?
Ouch!
And quite frankly, there are a whole lot of people out there who find the idea a complete turn-off. And you've got to be careful about keeping it clean too...

of course you should get it pierced- its what its for-youll enhance your beauty no end-of course it doesnt hurt-just a hole the width of a knitting needle right throughit- no prob, and when the swelling/infection cuts off your airway whilst youre having a 6 hour wait in A&E,remember how to make a dignified exit.

Would it hurt if you shoved a whacking great, unecessary needle anywhere else in your head?
What do you think it will feel like, wiping a cotton wool ball over your cheek???
