I think that there are a lot of reasons. I will list the ones that I can think of.
1) As a defense mechanism.
2) As an expression of their prejudice.
3) Avoiding the result of knowing their own reaction to certain 'types' of people. They might not like the way they themselves will react to a certain person.
Those reasons can be explained further, but I am trying to answer more than a few questions today. I hope that shed some light on the subject for you.
Even IF they don't understand you, you can understand them. But don't judge them! ;)

People tend to judge others because they are constantly looking to see if they are better than others. Also, people tend to find flaws in others that they themselves have. Everyone likes to think that they don't judge others, but we all do it. It is a stupid thing to do because each person is different and it is what is in the inside that really counts. I know that sounds cheesy but it's true, however, most people don't take the time to see it or they don't even think it. Judging people is just one of those human characteristics that some, including myself, wish we didn't have. I hope that answers your question.

im goingt o be as honest as i can: this is what i think, like it or not we live in a shallow world, and its only because we are humans, even you or me have judged somebody even if we hate people that judge, but what would you say about some guy thats wearing a suit with 600 shoes waiting for his ferrari in a valet parking, and souting to the valet guy, that he wants his car in 1 minute because he has a meeting, and telling him he is trash, you wouldnt have the best impression would you? would you judge they guy? maybe he is a millioner that gives 50% of what he earns to poor people, but that was a really bad day for him, but we dont know that so i would judge him and say he is a cocky a s s h o l l e... what would you say?

I agree with tootsie1115 that not everyone does this, but there certainly are a lot of people who do this. They usually base their prejudice on the little details that they know about you... If you're a democrat, they can go as far as saying that you're gay, or you promote promiscuity (that's far off, but you get my drift).
Prejudice is based more on what kind of people they are, what is their background, their upbringing, and their strong held beliefs. If they are hardcore fundamentalists and republicans, then good luck if you are a democrat, in their minds you probably are the devil with a pitchfork to boot. So what they think about you, says more about them, than about who you really are.
We see the world not as it is, but as who we are.
(No offense to the political parties, just proving a point)

Not everyone judges others prior to meeting. When my son got married, I had not met his bride. Everyone kept telling me all sorts of bad things about her and I started to form an opinion based on what I was being told. Then I realized that it was not fair because I was basing my opinion solely on hearsay. After that when someone would tell me something bad about her, my comment was, "If he is happy with her, that is what counts and I don't care to hear your negative comments."

they do it because they are idiots. thats all. there is NO REASON to make judgments without meeting someone first. my mom did the same thing, there was a guy i worked with, he was from mexico, and i had a big crush on him. she told me to stay away from him cause mexicans just use women. i cant believe her sometimes. in the end, yes, he did just use me, but he was a good guy at first, there was no reason to make a snap judgment like that, and she never EVER met him.
