its called linea nigra (sp?). I didnt get this line during my first pregnancy. Linea nigra (Latin for "black line") or linea negra (altered by influence of Spanish negra) is a skin pigment condition during pregnancy where a brownish streak less than a centimeter in width develops. The line runs vertically along the midline of the abdomen from the pubis to the xiphoid process - the bottom-most part of the rib cage in the center or tip of the sternum.
It is caused by pregnancy hormones that increase production of the pigment melanin. This is also known as hyperpigmentation. Fair-skinned women show this symptom less often than women with darker pigmentation. Before it appears it may be more faintly visible as a linea alba ("white line").
Linea nigra tends to appear around the second trimester and may or may not disappear within a few months after birth. Some research suggests there may be a link between linea nigra and insulin. Supplementing the diet with folic acid is said to reduce the discoloration.
There is an old wives' tale associated with linea nigra: if the linea nigra runs to the navel, it's a girl, and if it goes all the way up to the xiphoid, it's a boy.

Don't know what or why it is, just happens to us when we get pregnant. It is a dark line from your belly button down. I am almost sixteen weeks, and yet to see the line. But I still have morning sickness - hoping it is gone soon.

Are you speaking of the line from your belly button to your pubic area??? It is normal. I don't know why it is there and I don't know what its purpose is. All I do know is that it goes away after the baby comes and a lot of women get it. Good luck and congrats.

if you mean the LINEA NEGRA that we get fron the pelvic bone to un der our breast, that line is normal is just pigmentation as you might have notice you pigmentation level are higher due to hormonal changes, you may also notice darkening in you genital areas, underarms, and some spots in your face, many women get the dark stains in their faces some other like me in diferent parts of the body, dont worry all this will return to normality once you have your baby and your hormones are back to the levels they were before you were pregnant, congratulations on your bunddle of joy

That's called linea nigra. It will go away shortly after you have the baby, and it's totally normal.
