I have an1985 Chevy pickup, it has the 8 foot bed. I took the engine and transmission out of my ElCamino and put them in the pickup. The tranny from the ElCamino has a short tail piece. I had to have a new drive shaft made, they used all new tubing and put in both new U-joints, the new shaft is 6 inches longer. It was also balanced. I think they did a good job on it, they specialize in this sort of thing. I put a new seal in the tail piece and after a few miles it starts to leak. The last time I think it only lasted 100 miles. I thought because of the extra lenght I need two shafts with a carrier bearing in the middle. Any Ideas on why you think it may start to leak so soon????? I buy my seals at NAPA, I think it says Chicago seal on them, Chicago something anyway.

Before you install the drive shaft into the trans make sure the seal fits tight on the shaft. My brother had the same problem with his S-10 when he put a V8 under the hood. He had to buy the model (seal) 2 years older to fit the shaft. Leak stopped!

Also make sure to get some fine emory cloth and polish the shaft to make sure you have no sharp burrs.

Are you sure the new driveshaft is long enough? If it's even a little bit too short the yoke on the driveshaft won't go in as far as it should. This will cause the shaft to wobble at the yoke and cause the seal to fail. You also don't state why the tranny is so different it needed a longer driveshaft. The yoke from the original tranny could be slightly under-sized letting fluid leak past.

a few questions first. is the tailpiece bolted onto the tranny or is it one piece? if its bolted on, did you replace the gasket between the tailpiece and tranny? ive seen that gasket leak . the new 2 piece drive shaft has to be the same legnth as the old one. is it? napa usually uses C&R seals, good quality, but these days you are just as likely get a new part out of the box that is broken as you are to get a good one. id try a new seal first, if it still leaks, id try the drive shaft next

i own a repair shop,in Tennessee, and id try a better seal,,the one you spoke of there isn't much of a seal, and it sounds like they did a good job on the drive shaft, but a cheap seal will make one leak,i don't think at this point you have much to worry about with the length of the drive shaft being long, that shouldn't cause any problems with it,go to advance auto parts and get a good seal for it,and see if that helps it,,if not I'm sure we can figure it out,,good luck,i hope this help,s.

properly, Fleamarket, my advice to you'd be to carry your motor vehicle right into a reliable, especially regarded community save and performance them service the transmission for you. Why? because once you would possibly want to invite "the position do you upload the tranny fluid?" ...then it really is a sensible guess you do not comprehend the impressive thanks to envision your transmission fluid element to work out if it surely needs servicing contained in the first position. putting the incorrect element of fluid in a transmission ...the tendency is to overfill it ...is purely as undesirable, if no longer worse, than having a low fluid element. The transmission fluid dipstick is in various of circumstances placed close to the transmission and the transmission will be to one aspect or the different in the adventure that your engine is placed longitudinally or placed decrease back in the route of the firewall if the engine is placed fore and aft. although, on certain severe end ecu vehicles like Mercedes or BMW, there is not any dipstick and servicing is *purely* done on the dealership (a number of those vehicles don't have oil dipsticks both).

All you can do is try another seal. Maybe from a different manufacturer.
