I wasn't aware this was a new catch phrase! In my family, it's very old. In fact, I grew up hearing my mother say this. Even now, as an adult, whenever my mother does something for me and I want to pay her back, she says, "Pay it forward. When you're a mother and your child needs something, give it to her and you will have repaid me." For me, it's a very selfless and profound philosophy. It promotes a gift that keeps on giving.

I suppose it could be viewed as simple-minded and self-righteous if one does it publicly or without true concern for the one they're helping. Giving should always be done with the well-being of the recipient in mind and not self-image. It should also be done in private/anonymously.

It is a nice idea, but I don't use the phase because hardly something new. Most religions and socially responsible philosophies include the idea of the importance of helping others.
