All wheel drive is just that, all four wheels are drive wheels. They are great for traction in the winter. Four wheel drive can be switched to 2 wheel with a lever on locking hubs. These too are great in the winter. You usally cn switch to 4 wheel high for normal driving or 4 low which are very low gears used for pulling or any other job that requires a lot of torque. Sometimes in plowing in real deep snow. This usally gets better gas milage due to the fact you can switch to 2 wheel drive.

AWD is on all the time, and works well no matter what your speed is, etc. 4WD is usually engaged manually, and has a low and high gear. Low is only for certain things, as you can't go even remotely fast in it. high is for drivingon slippery or rough, muddy, snowy conditions.
