Hannukkah is not a Jewish version of Christmas, it just happens to fall close to Christmas. Hanukkah isn't even a major holiday and although there are 8 days of gifts, those gifts are quite small and usually only given to young children. Think along the lines of those net bags of chocolate candy coins and that gives you an idea of one of the traditional Hanuakkah gifts.
However, some Jews do celebrate Christmas - not the religious aspects but the giving of gifts. For some, it's a way to deal with the in-your-face commercialism this time of year. Others choose to do so to lessen the differences between their children and their non-Jewish friends. And some exchange Christmas gifts with friends as a gesture of goodwill. And there are those who don't give Christmas or Hanuakkah gifts at all. It's an individual decision. Everyone does what is best for them.

Some do because their kids are jealous of their non-Jewish friends...some do because they are only Jews on paper and the Jewish religion/culture is not important to them ...some are in an interfaith marriage and think it is best to expose their child(ren) to both religions (even though in the Jewish Religion, a child is the religion of his/her mother)...and then there are others who don't at all...
Some may give their non-Jewish friends Christmas gifts but they, the Jewish people, are not actually celebrating the Christmas holiday

well if i had a Jewish friend i would find a way to celebrate the holidays with him or her. but i'd let them know that i realize they celebrate hanukkah and have different beliefs. if they were the only jewish family in the area i wouldn't want them to feel left out.

I'm not jewish, but I knew a guy in college who was. It's a social holiday for them, not a religious one. His family gave presents to each other, and put them under the Hanukkah bush.
