Heartrate is NOT accurate to determine the baby's sex. It's fun, but an old wives tale.

RE:
Fetal heart rate and sex of baby?
I have heard from a few people that sometimes heart rate can help determine sex of baby. People say average fetal heart rate is between 120-160 and that boys usually have a heart rate of 120-140 and girls 150-160. Just wondering what other people experience with this has been?? My friends fetal...

I don't know if any official research has been done, but I have definitely noticed the correlation.
Baseline heart rates of 150 almost determine to a letter that it is a girl in my experience, unless the mom is running a fever (that increases the baby's rate) or the baby is very active during the time that the heart rate is taken.
Lower rates of 120's almost always determine a boy. I have never seen a baby girl born with that low of a heart rate.
140's is where you get in a grey area...can be a girl or a boy at that point.
Again, never seen research on this, just a LOT of fetal heart rate strips. And again...I am talking about baseline heart rate...when the baby is at rest, not during activity.
You sparked my curiousity on this one, so decided to look it up. There is no evidence to support this theory except for one--see below:
In fact, only a single study seems to lend any support to the thesis: a study at the University of Kentucky in 1993 concluded that fetal heartbeat could accurately predict the sex of a fetus in about 74 percent of cases when the fetus was a girl, and 91 percent when it was a boy
The rest of the studies proved inconclusive. I have never told mom's in labor that I could predict sex based upon it, but certainly liked predicting to myself and finding out if I was right if mom chose not to know.

It's a myth! With my first pregnancy I actually had to have tests because the heart rate was so low (only about 110) and I had a healthy baby girl about 4 months later. My friend told me she had high heart rates with all 3 of her boys, and with her daughter. There might be an average range for boys and girls, but I wouldn't rely on it, just like the gender prediction calendar, the way you carry, you nose getting wider or any other old wives tales people talk about. Good Luck either way!

This is not always true, please dont believe that. My doctor told me that I was having a boy up until my last week , of visits. That week the heart rate went down to the low 140's and he said "huh, have any of us told you that you might be having a girl"? I said no this was the first I heard of it. (Where I was going for my OBGYN, appts. you saw three different doctors, Finally when I had my first child I could pick which out of all of the doctor's I liked best). So needless to say, that I had a girl with my second child, I could not tell on my sonogram, she would not cooperate, and the cord was wrapped between her legs, so they said well you probably are having a boy. I was all set for a boy , and could not of been happier with what ever I had. I had a boy for my first child. So I had everything that I needed for a boy. So according to all of the old wise tales do not believe them, they are all just guestimates until your child is actually born. Unless you have that needle done, that can definitly tell you what sex of a child you are having. Please don't get your hopes up with any thing definite. Take everything with a grain of salt, and wait until the day your child is born.. Yes, the doctor can tell you some things to sway you in what you are having, but unless you have a very accurate sonogram done, ( And I mean Can See Everything,Where It Is Suppose To Be!!!). Keep in mind that everything is a guess, just like the old wise tales. Good Luck With Your Baby!!! And Congrats!!!

I'm definitely having a little boy and his heart rate has averaged at 156 throughout this entire pregnancy.
I think heart rate is one of the most common wifes tales - they have some credibility, but the only thing to trust for sure is what you can see (and sometimes that isn't until baby is here).
Good Luck!

That's just a myth. It doesn't matter. My friend has 5 boys and all of them had heart rates of 160. My son was about 140. Don't count on the heart rate determining whether or not you are having a boy or girl.

I really dont believe in that wise tale. I am having a boy. I am 20 weeks, and for four weeks have had an at home heartrate monitor we bought online. His heartrate every night is around 152-155. I have a hyper little guy, who is moving around all the time. I dont think you can really tell from this whether it is a boy or girl...the best way is from an ultrasound. We have had three and everytime it has been found it is a boy, so I am pretty sure he is.

They are all wives tales, and they way I heard it was the other way around. Boys higher and girls lower. It has been true for me. Both my girls heart rates were high 30 low 40s and this time its 155, and just found out that it is a boy. Best of luck and wait till the sono to find out.
