Lack of confidence comes from becoming habituated to failure and not liking it. To become more confident, you first have to recognize that it is a process/journey rather than a switch that you turn on/off.
Here are a few things you can do, including that bromide answer earlier about leaving self-positive notes you can leave around the house:
1. Develop an expertise...this could be in a board game, cards, movies...anything that has some following in the world. Research it, breathe it, live it and internalize it. Once you feel you have the expertise, talk/demonstrate about it to someone with whom you feel close. If they are impressed with your expertise, release it to general public - talk to others, challenge them with your expertise. You will win each time.
Now, rinse, repeat for something else.
You will acquire confidence in about 3 months with this method.
2. Lack of self-confidence can be a result of negative self-image. This may be the result of your environment & people around you. If you think this is the case, exercise control over shaping your environment to suit your needs. If your best friend is constantly belittling you, it is time to change the 'best friend'.
Let me know how it goes...whichever way you decide.

First thing don't worry what anyone else thinks of you, you are you and you are as good as anyone else---if not better. Be more positive in your outlook, when you speak say itin a tone of voice that shows people you know and beleive what you're talking about. try and relax more because relaxation and positivity along with self confidence go hand in hand. I used to be like you, very negative, no self confidence, but I am a different person, I bought some self help books which included cds, and they worked wonders, I have got over many of my fears, why even to-day I was confident to go into a swimming pool for the first timein years. I can face the world, feel more motivated , to put it in a nut shell I feel GREAT. Good luck to you

Ask yourself why you're not a confident person. Why do you care what people think about and say to you? Are you self-conscious? Do you feel unattractive or unintelligent? I would try irrational thought replacement. Everytime you have an irrational thought like "they think I look stupid" or something similar ask yourself why they wuold think you look stupid? Replace the thought with a rational one.. "people are more concerned with themselves and don't care about what I look like". If you are overweight or whatever and this is what's causing you to feel so insecure, then you need to take the steps to change in order to achieve a healthy state of mind.

Try reading books about confidence. Find the root of why you aren't that confident, and if possible, change them(usually it's your past experience that make you what you are now. try changing your perception of your experiences), well past is past, and everyday is a brand new day. by allowing yourself to change your perspective of life, humankind and the like, you'll be able to see a change in yourself(that's nature), so relax, and take your time at your comfortable pace to regain your confidence! not to forget, find acceptance in groups where you can practice being confident, and you'll be encouraged by their acceptance.

Recognizing yourself that there is not other way of feeling confident than doing the necessary to have the knowledge (using books, videocourses, Web tutorials,...) about whatever aspect makes you feel unconfident/insecure.
For example, if you feel unconfident at work, you can study books or articles about how to interact with people, or study a course about the software that you have to use at work, etc.
for sure you will feel more confident once you know well how whatever subject works and/or how to deal with it.
